Music at Christ Church
The music
provided at Christ Church is offered to the greater glory of God. Whether sung
by a children's choir or one of the adult choirs, the goal is to provide music
that can inspire those worshipping with us and bring everyone to a deeper
knowledge of God's love and beauty.
As
Episcopalians, we are inheritors of a choral music tradition of exceptional
quality. We embrace this tradition at Christ Church by offering music that has
stood the test of time. However, we also champion the work of modern day
composers who prove that God continues to speak through musicians writing today.
On a Sunday morning, a visitor to Christ Church might hear a Renaissance anthem,
a Victorian anthem, a traditional spiritual, or a modern anthem at any service.
Regardless of the style or period of the music, we aim to provide music of
respect and dignity. The music programming is guided by the lectionary readings
for the day as well as the liturgical season. The service of Choral Evensong is
offered monthly by one of our choirs. If you are new to the Episcopal church,
this is a wonderful opportunity to "worship the Lord in the beauty of
holiness." (Psalm 96)
Visiting choirs
are always welcome at Christ Church, especially on Sundays. If your ensemble is
traveling to the Washington D.C. area and would like to sing in our historic
setting, please contact the music office. The earlier the request can be made,
the less likely there will be a conflict with another visiting group.
Our choirs are
affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music in America. The children's
choirs use the Voice for Life curriculum as they learn about music and the role
of music in our faith tradition. Our children's choirs have great strength and
help to lead our worship weekly at the 9:00 a.m. Sunday services. There are
three rehearsals on Wednesday evenings for children of various ages.
Christ Church is
also known for the strength of its congregational singing. The parishioners here
love to sing, and we encourage those visiting with us to join in singing all of
the hymns and service music. Henry Van Dyke said, "The woods would be very
silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best." Every voice is
needed to help us make a joyful noise.
If you are
interested in any of the choirs, we welcome new members. The choirs are all
strong communities within the larger family of Christ Church. Regardless of your
background or skill level, if you are willing to invest the time and dedication
that such an ensemble requires, there is a place for you in the music at Christ
Church.
