New Neighbors Education Center

ESL provides quality instruction in English to immigrants and refugees while making instruction accessible by providing low cost childcare. It helps create a caring community that collaborates with social service organizations to help students who need assistance learning English.

Ministry Needs

Participants need to have an interest in working with people from many different countries. Some teachers are professionals but many have never taught before. Teachers and assistant teachers work on teams to teach a group of students at the same level using the instructional materials provided. Computer managers help students and teachers use language teaching software in the ESL computer lab. Office workers help with databases, mailings, copying, etc.

Training Provided

Orientation in fall and spring before courses begin, and an overview of some materials and methods we use, with emphasis on the practical and some underlying theory. Literacy Council of Northern Virginia course provided for new ESL teachers. On the job training as an assistant teacher and/or communication with experienced volunteers and periodic teachers' meetings.

Meetings and Time Required

Classes meet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM during two twelve week courses. Teachers and computer managers are asked to commit to one morning per week for twelve weeks; there is some flexibility for substitutes and office workers.

Benefits

Meet people from all over the world. Work with other parishioners in the Fowler House facilities. See accomplishments among students and feel their pride, while serving a critical need of newcomers to our neighborhood.
